Collection no.4

Most people, at some point in their lives, will have a scar. A physical reminder of something that has happened. Humans have been infatuated with scars and body modification for a long time, with scarification and tattooing dating back thousands of years. Scarification has roots in many cultures with varying reasons for its practice. In Tanga, scarification is done on adolescent boys as a mark of status, but scarification done by Ainu women is done to avoid the blazing sword of the devil that will scar them in hell. They believe it’s better to have the scars you choose rather than those inflicted upon you. In this way, the scars of the Ainu women are armor, ensuring their eternal safety. In Collection no.4, I was inspired by scarification as armor.
